D E P R E S S I O N
It's one of those words that so many people hear (and even use) on a daily basis, but never really seem to understand.
Depression isn't just feeling perpetually "sad" or "bummed". Depression is heavy. It not only alters one's mood and perception of life, but also causes physical symptoms ranging from dizziness and fatigue to gastrointestinal issues, changes in appetite, and bodily pain. Depression is debilitating, life altering, and despite what many may say, it isn't something a person can choose to simply "turn off".
This is because, scientifically, the biological explanation of depression suggests that an imbalance in neurotransmitters (most notably serotonin) within the brain is what ultimately causes depression (Harvard Health, 2023). Researchers also suggest that issues surrounding disrupted nerve cell connections, nerve cell growth, and faulty functioning of nerve circuits may play an equally major role in the development of the condition (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
In short:
PEOPLE DON'T CHOOSE TO HAVE DEPRESSION!
In the same way an individual can "come down with the flu" or develop a physical ailment/disease, so too can they become uncontrollably impacted by mental illness.
Fortunately, depression IS treatable and individuals often find healing through pursuing psychological therapy, education, lifestyle changes, and/or taking antidepressants as prescribed by a certified clinician. Social Support also plays an incredibly important role in one's healing journey and this is why Nicole and I have decided to team up in the mission to normalize conversations surrounding depression and mental health.
We are so excited to announce that a portion of the proceeds from EVERY PURCHASE will be donated to NAMI Greater Wheeling!
